If you are just starting to search for scrapbook supplies and you are new to this hobby, you may be a little overwhelmed with the number of products that are available. Most scrapbookers start with a few basic supplies, and then add to their collection over time. If you are just getting started, here are the essentials you will need:
Scrapbook Album
There are many different styles and sizes of scrapbook albums. Many of these already come with page protectors. When you shop for an album, look to see if it is three ring binder style or similar style that will let you add additional pages over time.
Card Stock and/or Patterned Paper
Many people use a combination of card stock and patterned paper in their layouts, mixing and matching to create visual interest. Due to its sturdiness, most scrapbookers use card stock as a base for their layouts, then use patterned paper to add additional color and interest.
Cutting Tools
At the bare minimum, you should have a paper trimmer for cutting. As an alternative, you could use a craft knife, cutting mat, ruler and pencil. However, many of the scrapbooking paper trimmers are relatively inexpensive, and are much easier and quicker to use than the manual method. It is also a good idea to keep a sharp pair of scissors handy to create hand cut elements for your layouts.
Adhesives
When you first go shopping for scrapbooking supplies, you may be surprised to find an entire aisle at your local craft store devoted specifically to adhesives. With so many choices, it can be difficult to determine what you need. However, no matter what you decide to use, just make sure it is acid free and photo safe. Attach pictures and paper cutouts to your layouts using double sided tape. Adhesive runners are also useful for attaching pictures and die cut shapes. Fine tip glue pens and glue dots are also good to use for attaching other elements to your layouts.
Fine Tip Pens for Journaling
When you scrapbook, it's a good idea to add information about the event to the page. This is also known as journaling. Use fine tip pens for journaling, or if you prefer, use your computer and printer.
Additional Supplies
You really only need the above scrapbook supplies to get started. However, to add more visual interest to your layouts, you may also want to pick up a few more items. For example, a corner rounder is great for rounding the corners of your pictures. Stickers, die cuts, ribbons, rubber stamps, and brads and eyelets also are fun ways to add more details to your layouts.
To get started with this hobby, you really only need a few basic scrapbook supplies. You can slowly add more materials and tools to your collection over time.
